that's the impression that often lasts. >> even al gore and george w. bush is a good example of body language so much during those debates. al gore was up in the polls and had a series of very poor debate performances. >> al gore had been a very effe effective, aggressive debater. he was seen in the first debate as too aggressive. the sighs and the rest. in the second debate he was almost too laid back. by the third he had a just right approach by that time. those performances and all the other factors in the 2000 election held him back. >> humor. >> humor can be very important but it's something that has to -- some humorous lines probably are prescripted. there you go again, reagan, most people feel, was prepared. >> remember what lloyd benson said about -- >> yes. >> dan quayle. >> that famous line. i knew jack kennedy. jack kennedy was a friend of mine. senator, you are no jack kennedy. >> i just reread about all the debates, they prepared that line in advance because dan quayle made that comment over and over again. both are going in with prescripte

w. i think we've got to invest in education and training. i think it's important for us to develop new sources of energy here in america. that we change our tax code to make sure we're helping small businesses and companies that are investing here in the united states. that we take some of the money that we're saving as we wind down two wars to rebuild america. and that we reduce our deficit in a balanced way that allows us to make these critical investments. now, it ultimately is going to be up to the voters, to you which path we should take. are we going to double down on the top-down economic policies that helped to get us into this mess or do we embrace a new economic patriotism that says america does best when the middle-class does best? and i'm looking forward to having that debate. >> lehrer: governor romney two minutes. >> thank you jim it's an honor to be here with you and i appreciate the chance to be with the president. i'm pleased to be at the university of denver, appreciate

i was reminded in 2004 when john kerry was challenging george w. bush and we saw a similar debate performance where the challenger came out swinging, did very, very well. the incumbent president was a little bit on his heels mainly because sometime you're not used to being challenged by somebody in that type of setting. so we move to the next debate. it seems like mitt romney did very well on style, although substance might have been a different matter. >> speaking of substance, a lot of people thought this debate was more informative, but did these issues and ideas connect to the voters? >> i think so. you look at this abroad, there were so many statistics that were at issue. i did think it was a very substantive debate, but going on the substantive part, i think the next 24 hours or so, the obama campaign has the opportunity to seize on some of the facts that mitt romney was citing. one of the things he talked about, he said my tax plan isn't going to benefit wealthy high income americans, but every tax analysis out there shows that the wealthies

pursued by george w. bush that got us into this mess, i think the american people are going to see that and look past what is admittedly not the president's best night. i give it to governor romney on style points. but on substance, and that's what matters, the president wins and should. >> you're a friend of the president's. you know him better than almost anybody in the political world, certainly. what went wrong, do you think? what was the thinking? was there something we didn't know about? people suggesting he may have been given bad news just to explain the sort of strangely morose mood he seemed to be in. >> i really don't know. i wasn't in denver. i know whenever i go to denver it takes me a little while to adjust to the altitude. i don't know whether that was -- i'm purely speculating, piers. i just don't know. i do think that the president was right on the substance, but it would have been great to see more energy. i think the general public and certainly many of the pundits have said so, and i'l
